Death is an inevitable reality — a truth no one in this world can escape. Every living soul that enters this temporary world will one day depart and return to the eternal life of the Hereafter. Losing a loved one is among the most difficult trials a person can face. While we cannot bring them back, we can continue to benefit them through sincere duas and righteous deeds performed in their name.
A heartfelt prayer for the deceased can illuminate their grave, bring them peace, and elevate their rank in the Hereafter. In Islam, the power of dua for those who have passed away is immense. It is a timeless gift whose reward reaches them long after they have left this world.
We will discuss some authentic duas for the deceased, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, to be recited when someone has passed away. These supplications are based on authentic Hadith and provide a powerful means of seeking mercy, forgiveness, and blessings for our loved ones in the Hereafter.
Authentic Dua for Dead Person in Islam
Some of the most authentic and commonly recited prophetic duas for the deceased include the following. These supplications, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, are a means of seeking Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and blessings for those who have passed away.
1. The Comprehensive Prophetic Dua for the dead Person
This is one of the most comprehensive and authentic duas taught by the Prophet ﷺ to be recited for a deceased person.
Jubair Ibn Nufair reports:
I heard from ‘Auf ibn Malik that the Prophet ﷺ offered a supplication over a deceased person, and I remembered his prayer as follows:
Translation:
“O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him peace and pardon him.
Honor his place of rest, expand his grave, wash him with water, snow, and ice. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, his spouse with a better spouse. Enter him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and Hellfire.”
(Sahih Muslim, 963)
2. Short Dua for Those Who Passed Away
There is also a short and powerful dua for the deceased, asking Allah to shower His mercy and forgiveness upon the departed soul.
Translation:
“O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him.”
3. Quranic Dua for Deceased Parents
The Qur’an contains many powerful supplications for deceased parents and fellow believers, guiding us on how to seek Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and blessings for those who have passed away.
Translation:
“My Lord, forgive me and my parents and have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.”
4. Dua for All Believers Who Have Died
Another powerful supplication you can recite is for all believers who have passed away before us:
Translation:
“Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any resentment toward those who believe. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”
5. Dua for Protection from Punishment of the Grave
There is also a dua that can be recited after burying the deceased in the graveyard, seeking protection for them from the punishment of the grave and asking Allah to grant them peace and mercy.
Translation:
“O Allah, make his grave a garden from the gardens of Paradise, not a pit from the pits of Hell.”
6. Dua for Forgiveness and Acceptance of Deeds
Translation:
“O Allah, forgive his sins, pardon his mistakes, and grant him a home better than his home.”

Final Thoughts
Making dua for a dead person in Islam is one of the most rewarding and compassionate acts we can perform for those who have returned to Allah. Whether it is a short dua for someone who died, a comprehensive prophetic dua, or a Qur’anic supplication, what matters most is sincerity of heart and intention. Islam teaches us that death is not the end. Our heartfelt duas continue to bring light to the graves of the deceased, ease their trials, and send ongoing rewards to their souls.
May Allah forgive our deceased parents, relatives, and all believing men and women.
May He widen their graves, fill them with light, and grant them Jannatul Firdaus.
Ameen.
